Background, history, commissioner of the work
Hard As Lips 2020. The piece was conceived during the Covid-19 lock down. It was a piece created with Covid-19 very much at the forefront of my concerns during this time. It was not commissioned, but created purely for the love of making and combining found and constructed materials.
Thematic/contextual information
I found a concrete construction block during one of my permitted walks in the shape of lips. A time when touching and kissing, a fundamental human response was denied and forbidden. the shape resonated, I combined the concrete block with a smooth, pure, curvaceous form of fabric cast plaster which puckers slightly & gapes in a sensual manner, married with the rough slightly discoloured concrete block became a stark reminder that we had been denied one of our natural human senses.
