Background, history, commissioner of the work

Hand carved, as part of a series of works investigating how biological cells fit or pack together to create structure, utilising a system called “closest packing theory”. Based on research into the Human Genome Project, I received funding to work with an interdisciplinary research group at University of Exeter, culminating in a solo exhibition in 2006 at the Northcote Gallery on campus. Shown in two other solo exhibitions in York and Bradford.

Thematic/contextual information

I was looking at how organic cells fill space. How a soft, flexible membrane full of liquid acts in order to maximise its efficiency in packing together, and ultimately creating a structure, ie a human, etc a tree. I then took this idea and worked with it in a rigid, hard material such as stone, setting up a contrast in outcome yet working from the same starting point. Can the stone be made to look soft, and tactile? Squishy and soft?

Background, history, commissioner of the work

This work has been shown at the Goldsmiths Degree Show in 2021, as well as in a solo show at Artist Hive Studios in Tottenham, and was used to successfully apply for a spot on SIM Residency, Iceland, which I'll be attending for a month next April 2022.

Thematic/contextual information

Built for my BA degree show at Goldsmiths, the piece replicates a cartoonish version of an American or Nordic barn, which appears to have been dragged out of a cartoon and placed in reality. The laborious nature of its construction, as well as its contextualisation in line with the hidden labour which occurs constantly under late stage capitalism, aims to satirise notions of contemporary work in a lighthearted way.

Dimensions (cm)

Height: 187
Length: 360
Depth: 70

Materials

Painted plywood & coir matting

Suitable Locations for the Work

  • Indoors
  • Outdoors
  • Floor-based
  • Freestanding

Background, history, commissioner of the work

The work was created for the 'Graduate Drive Thru' exhibition, as a part of Glasgow Open House, September 2021. https://graduatedrivethru.com/

Thematic/contextual information

My sculptures usually take the form of utilitarian objects that have been rendered unfit for purpose. 'Carpet Burn' follows this train of thought, building upon ideas of functionality, normalcy & things not going to plan. The sculpture resembles a playground slide in primary colours, with the 'slide' element removed & replaced with coir matting flopped vertically down it.

Rebus

Year

Dimensions (cm)

Height: 30
Length: 20
Depth: 10

Materials

Concrete, Recycled Stone

Suitable Locations for the Work

  • Indoors
  • Floor-based
  • Freestanding
  • On a plinth
  • In a case

Background, history, commissioner of the work

Intermediate Interactions, The Foundry Gallery, London, 2020

Thematic/contextual information

The work explores the relationship of art and architecture. Rebus utilises repetitive shapes and forms that have geometric and linear values. Using concrete asks questions about the relationship of architecture and sculpture. The mundane colour of the material allows the viewer can pay more attention to the form and structure of the work. The works almost appropriate different architectural and other functional objects and combine them together to create a hybrid.
