Background, history, commissioner of the work
Two-Step/Big 4 was produced during a five-day residency at Scottish Opera Production Workshop. These canvases are the largest works produced to date within the collaboration. Exhibiting them in The Studio at Beacon Arts Centre, a black space ordinarily used for performance, allows the work to be suspended, granting the viewer access from multiple directions and polarising the traditional white cube gallery set-up.
This is a series of 4 works which can be loaned individually or collectively.
Thematic/contextual information
The two Glasgow based visual artists were drawn to one another’s work when they met and noticed their shared aesthetic and process. Two-Step involves a range of activities committed to the traditions of drawing, printmaking and painting. The similarity of the pair’s separate outputs, and the velocity of their relationship, generates a trust in each other that allows both voices to be present and equal at every stage of the process.
