Background, history, commissioner of the work
Born in Stirling, Catriona is an Edinburgh-Based Queer intermedia artist with education from Edinburgh Universities ECA. The manifesto for her artistic practice takes the viewer on a journey through the history, conflict, and resolution of Queer voices. Creating a contemporary practice from these stories, she constructs an interdisciplinary range of affirming works for Queer and Allies alike.
I proposed an installation of sweet and enlarged bff bracelet sculptures with a pink foil backdrop, exhibited at RSA.
Thematic/contextual information
This enlarged sweet sculpture quotes the private love letters between Eleanor Roosevelt & Lorena Hickok, reclaiming the nostalgic experience of exchanging Love-Heart Sweets for all. So many Queer women who worked overtly in the public eye had to live subverted. Queer lives historically have been hidden, but by putting queer love at the forefront, we can transform shame into pride —a Pride built on connection and love which every queer person deserves.
