Background, history, commissioner of the work
Originally sculpted in plaster in 2023, the shape was taken directly from the shadow of my own body. It is now exhibited at The Sculpture Park in Farnham.
Thematic/contextual information
Shadow Self marked the beginning of my exploration into Carl Jung’s theories on the “shadow self.” The piece features a literal shadow, permanently cast as a silhouette. Originally sculpted in plaster in 2023, the shape was taken directly from the shadow of my own body. This was translated into an 8-foot plaster cast, which I then carved, sanded, and polished by hand. The final version has been moulded and cast in Cold Cast Iron and mounted on a flat steel base.
