Background, history, commissioner of the work
I made this for the Glasgow School of Art, Fine Art Degree show in 2018.
Thematic/contextual information
I conceived the sculpture from observation while attending classmates from the Art School show they put on. While I was in Melbourne during an exchange programme at RMIT, I was in more traditional sculpture, and the equivalent shows there would be towering sculptures around by people chatting and drinking and not giving the sculptures any attention. There would be work around the room, but people were only interested in catching up with friends and drinking the free beer that was on offer.
I made the sculpture at the start of the Trump presidency. Lots of people in the art community were waving their fists and protesting. I thought, but why? Trump will not see the era of ways because 100 art students protested for a bit on the street outside the Art School. So I felt the protest placard was fitting.
I am also a big fan of the evil cult Scientology, and their origin story involves aliens that are flown to earth and dropped into Volcanos, and when they erupted, alien ghosts came out and possessed us all us. Our negative characteristics are down to these alien ghosts inside us, which are called Thetans. Scientologists spend obscene amounts of money going through a process that purports to remove these Thetans, called auditing, which is thinly veiled therapy.
