Background, history, commissioner of the work
Produced during a public sculpture commission for Midlothian Council, in response to a local coal seam.
The work was a material exploration and test-run for a larger public work that now sits outside Danderhall Community Hub. The aptly named coal seam, The Beefie, which runs underneath Midlothian, was streaked with layers of white stone, resembling a choice cut of beef. This geological phenomenon is hinted at here using pigmented concrete.
