Background, history, commissioner of the work
I was selected by a panel for a commission by Toast to create a display for their Edinburgh store. Part of the commission was a funded residency at the Inshriach Bothy, which is part of the Bothy Project - a network of small-scale, off-grid art residency spaces in distinct and diverse locations around Scotland
Thematic/contextual information
Using traditional craft techniques, I meditatively and obsessively join fibres together. The small, rhythmic repetitions build over time—they mimic the materials’ mode of manufacture, whilst eroding their original functions. As they accumulate, the sheer scale of the pieces act as a measure of absurd yet calming labour. These time-based manipulations make the artist hand not only apparent but inherent.
