Background, history, commissioner of the work

This work was a material and process investigation which was made during the production of a larger public sculpture for Midlothian Council. The work was made in response to a local coal seam.

Thematic/contextual information

The work was a material exploration and test-run for a larger public work that now sits outside Danderhall Community Hub. The aptly named coal seam, The Beefie, which runs underneath Midlothian, was streaked with layers of white stone, resembling a choice cut of beef. This geological phenomenon is hinted at here using pigmented concrete.
