Background, history, commissioner of the work
This piece was funded and conceived by the artist and is part of an ongoing long term project exploring themes of girlhood, identity and freedom. It has been exhibited at various venues; including a 2 woman show with Laura Ford at One Canada Square, Canary Wharf, the Royal West of England Academy, in a solo show "Holding up half the sky" in Bangalore, and one of the pieces awarded the Marshwood Arts Prize; selected by Tania Kovats in the sculpture category in 2019.
Thematic/contextual information
“All that glitters 2” is a child-woman doll figure exploring ideas of beauty and expectation; sexuality and innocence; the rose can be seen as a beautiful accessory or alternately as a ball and chain.
My work has a preoccupation with toys, employing them as both fun, innocent play things but also as repositories of cultural conditioning. Tania Kovats referred to my sculptures as “Stunning work, perplexing, awkward, confrontational sculptures to dream about as well as stand beside."
