Background, history, commissioner of the work
This piece was made during the Royal Society of Sculptors Brian Mercer residency in Pietrasanta, Italy, located in Tuscany near the Carrara marble quarries.
The circular "window" lets the light through and the piece benefits from being positioned in front of a light source.
NB, though the total weight is around 472kg, the piece is made in 2 pieces, the base weighing slightly more than half this, and the top section weighing slightly less.
Thematic/contextual information
Inspired by the translucent stone windows in local churches, I experimented with the translucent quality of high grade statuario marble.
The title comes from the anti-war song by Robert Burns, Ye Jacobites by Name: "Then leave your schemes alone, adore the rising sun, And leave a man alone to his fate, to his fate".
