Galashiels Public Sculpture Project 2023-24

Freelance Opportunities

Sculpture Placement Group (SPG) are an action research organisation working across Scotland to promote sustainable working in the arts; to give access to the arts to many more people and to find ways for artists to have more financially sustainable careers.

Between October 2023 – July 2024 we will deliver a project across a number of venues in Galashiels that will enable residents and visitors to Galashiels to enjoy works by sculptor Agnes Jones (pictured). We will also use the work as inspiration for a number of artists’ workshops and consultation sessions for audiences to share their thoughts and experiences.

The project is supported by Energise Galashiels Trust with funding from Scottish Borders Council and South of Scotland Enterprise. To enable its delivery, SPG has a number posts that we are looking to appoint on a freelance basis:

  • Art Handler

  •  Public Consultation Person

  • Workshop Delivery Artist (Sculpture)

  •  Website Designer

Art Handler

The Art Handler will be required to move and arrange and oversee the transportation of the sculptures between venues for two events. The role will include manual handling and have a flexible schedule as dates for the moves are yet to be confirmed.

A Driving License is advantageous and the role would suit someone with art handling experience or who has worked as a technician. You will be responsible for the care and maintenance of the artworks during the transit and event days. The time commitment for this role is 2x full days and 4x half days. There will be a fixed fee of £700 (£175 p/d).

Interested candidates should apply with note of interest outlining relevant skills/experience and contact details.

Public Consultation Person

We want to appoint an individual to work with SPG on the delivery of the public consultation aspect of the project. The consultation will take place during 2 public

events where you will be expected to engage with the public and passers-by to chat about their opinions of the work and public sculpture in Galashiels. The format and questions for these events will be developed with SPG but led by you. This role will suit candidates with excellent communication skills and experience in public-facing positions such as retail, customer service or canvassing. An interest in art and public sculpture is advantageous.

The dates of these sessions are yet to be confirmed and the time commitment is 3x full days and 2x half days with a fixed fee of £1000 (£250 p/d) available for this work.

Interested candidates should apply with note of interest outlining relevant skills/experience and contact details.

Workshop Delivery Artist (Sculpture)

We will programme 3 hands-on art workshops to be delivered between Oct 2023 and July 2023. Participants have yet to be confirmed but they could be for either organised groups such as school or community groups or could take the form of public drop-in sessions. The focus of the workshops should be on sculptural processes, and can be related to Agnes’ Jones’ work (pictured).

The dates have yet to be confirmed but the time commitment is 3 x 2 hour sessions plus preparation time (included in fee). There is a fixed fee of £1200 available for this work not including materials or hospitality which has been budgeted for separately.

Interested candidates should apply with note of interest outlining relevant skills/experience, contact details and images.

Website Designer

We require a simple, interactive website to be designed and updated throughout the period October 2023 and July 2024. This should contain information about the project and should offer a simple way to capture feedback from the public. A fixed fee of £1500 is available for this work which should include hosting, graphic design, maintenance and updates for key events over the project. Interested candidates should apply with note of interest outlining relevant skills/experience, links to previous work and contact details.
