A unique, interactive sculpture / play structure created in late 2025.
Inspired by my longstanding admiration for the work of architects Sir John Soane and Aldo Rossi, PRISM was designed to be an intriguing, joyful and memorable sequence of spatial and multi-sensory experiences for younger children.
PRISM was exhibited alongside CONTINUOUS STRUCTURES (1 & 2) at the Royal Scottish Academy as part of the Visual Arts Scotland exhibition Dec2025-Jan2026. These artworks form part of ongoing research into the inventor of the Kindergarten, Frederic Froebel, and his child-centred education ethos. I am currently engaged in the creation of interactive sensory playthings and inhabitable sculptures that promote non-prescriptive, imaginative, dynamic play. Feedback from VAS show organisers, and responses from visitors was very positive indeed !
PRISM is a modular structure comprising 900mm x 900mm bolt together sections, and can be reconfigured and modified to be suitable for either indoor or outdoors settings eg. raised up off the ground on a robust Oak framework, with ladders/steps/ramps/ platforms. The form can be made waterproof – using Scottish Larch shiplap cladding, and fixing a clear acrylic sheet internally would protect the glazed apertures.
