Notebook and Pencil

Background, history, commissioner of the work

It was included in my solo exhibition ‘Dividing Time’, Glasgow Project Room, Glasgow (2017). I received Open Project Funding from Creative Scotland to research and make the body of work that this is part of.

Thematic/contextual information

It was inspired by the futuristic office of Malachi Constant in ‘The Sirens of Titan’ by Kurt Vonnegut (1959). He commissions an office in which everything including tables and chairs float. A major theme in the novel is free will and the loss of gravity seems to add to this. Gravity is a subject that I frequently return to in my work and I wanted the notebook and pencil to appear as though they are floating from the wall as a nod to that and to the novel.
