Folds

Background, history, commissioner of the work

‘Folds’ was commissoned by SPACE, London for my solo exhibition (13 Jan–25 Mar 2017). The work saw me live carve a torso-sized piece of bath stone into the likeness of fresh bread dough alongside two female stonemasons. The work makes visible the passage of time and the processes of craft and collaboration that transform the material world. The fresh dough decays; skills are learnt; the stone is sculpted; visitors come and go; and the folds of dough are petrified in the immutable block of stone.

Thematic/contextual information

The process of making ‘Folds’ was made public through the exhibition – I worked as an apprentice to the stone masons emphasising their skill, collaboration and time necessary to gain this kind of knowledge, to make marks in a material. ‘Folds’ is part of a body of work encompassing performances, sculpture and drawings which I have been making over the last five years around the production of bread, yeast and dough, investigating how the body learns, adapts, responds and performs.
