Circular Arts Network (CAN) is a sharing platform created by Sculpture Placement Group to support the creative sector’s transition towards a more circular and sustainable way of working. It connects artists, organisations, and institutions who want to redistribute, reuse, or repurpose surplus materials and resources, keeping them in use and out of landfill.
Launched in response to the climate emergency and the challenges of material waste in the arts, CAN is designed as a practical tool that encourages generosity, collaboration and creative problem-solving. It’s free to use and open to anyone working in the creative industries — from grassroots artists and students to major institutions and production houses.
CAN allows users to list and browse materials, equipment, tools, transport, and even skills — anything that could be useful to another artist or organisation. Whether it’s timber offcuts from an exhibition build, spare plinths in storage, or a skillshare offer for welding or web design, the platform enables exchanges that benefit both the giver and receiver while reducing environmental impact.
The platform is now available as a free, open-source WordPress plug-in that can be installed on any website. Developed in collaboration with Considerate Digital, the CAN plug-in enables local organisations to create their own sharing networks without the cost of building a bespoke system from scratch. Each host can adapt the platform to reflect their community’s identity and values, while remaining connected to a wider ecosystem of circular activity. This distributed model strengthens local creative economies, fosters cross-artform collaboration, and supports the sector’s shift toward long-term sustainability.
