About the Artwork
The central theme in this work is an exploration of place, with the place being the Highlands and Islands. An exploration of memory through minimal formal means.
Background, history, commissioner of the work
The central theme in this work is an exploration of place with the place being the Highlands and Islands. I began an exploration of this via memory which allowed a looking back into childhood from an adult perspective. These memories were then brought back into the present and through process forms and ideas began to emerge. Layers of depth and meaning were revealed from the past and present which led to these finished pieces as a purely formal response with attention on form and colour hinting at the influence of minimalism.
Thematic/contextual information
I continue to explore questions around the importance of memory and its links to place. Why for example do I not feel this same sense of attachment to East Lothian where I was brought up? What was it from my formative years that brought me to a sense of place for the Highlands and Islands? How does this influence my attraction to other landscapes out with this area? Why do I feel moved to respond in the abstract? Through further reading and study on these questions I gain deeper understanding of the drivers in my practice, which adds into the process within my work.
