Background, history, commissioner of the work
This work was originally made for a group exhibition at the ICA in 2002 at which I also exhibited two large scale wall paintings and a smaller work on Perspex. It was later shown at CCA and at the Mappin Gallery, Sheffield in related shows. It hasn't been exhibited since then. It refers to developmental processes, whether explicitly artistic or otherwise, implying actions of composition, selection, rejection and approval and arose from my fascination with an archive image from Denys Lasdun's office that shows a dumped stack of rejected models for his National Theatre project.
Thematic/contextual information
This work was an early example of my interest in the point at which painting tips over into sculpture in the form of the relief. This tendency is a constant in my work so in that regard, this is a significant work for me despite it not having been shown for 15 years.
