Background, history, commissioner of the work
The work is constructed using familiar domestic materials and utilises used insulating tubes, innertubes from the local bicycle repair shop, worn PVC belts and ribbons sourced from the local textile waste/ recycling facility. The choice of materials was quite deliberate. Used, pre loved, abused, recycled.
Thematic/contextual information
The knitted piece is a brutally honest piece of a personal nature and deals with a specific time in my life regarding an unpleasant divorce. The gold and silver hoops signify marriage, the rubber eludes to the erotic nature of our sexual relationships and that of adultery, the chain links symbolise the entwined nature of human relationships within a marriage, the male/female roles within the domestic sphere and the ability to hook and unhook the eye which symbolises both the male & female sex.
