Background, history, commissioner of the work
Originally created for an exhibition at Pollok House, Glasgow in 2017. The work has since been shown at The MacLaurin Art Gallery Ayr in 2018 and 2022.
Thematic/contextual information
A sculpture created for historic Pollok House, Glasgow, a National Trust listed property. Inspired by the history of Pollok House and its collection of Spanish paintings, the artist created a series of plinths inscribed with a quote from Charles V of Spain whose portrait hangs in Pollok House. The quote takes the form of advice given by Charles to his son Phillip II, ‘Trust No One, Listen to Everyone, Decide Alone’. Advice which is still valid today.
