Background, history, commissioner of the work
This work was made during a residency at Electro Studios in Hastings and shown in their exhibitions space afterwards alongside the works of Sam Smith, Becky Beasely and Leah Clements in an exhibition, Oceanic Feelings, funded by the Arts Council and curated by Mariana Lemos. They can be shown on a wall but brackets would need to be designed.
Thematic/contextual information
This group of work was a response to the paintings of Sam Smith, a neurodiverse painter from the collective, Project Artworks. We share an interest in washing machines - Sam because of the movement he can watch, and me because of my interest in what we use, don't notice and discard. I started my residency with the delivery of three washing machines which I dismantled and used to make new work. I am currently experimenting with tile as a resilient sculptural material.
