Background, history, commissioner of the work
This work was made for the solo exhibition 'Map-i; Mercator Revisited' at the Mercator Museum in St Niklaas, Belgium in 2013. This body of work was made in response to s short residency at the Museum in 2012. This work was supported by Creative Scotland and the Mercator Museum, St. Niklaas, with a piece from a exhibition purchased for its permanent collection.
Thematic/contextual information
The Mercator projection is still used in many online mapping applications .The streetmaps used in the series of twelve curved vessels in Terra Mundi are abstractions of Googlemaps of significant places in the artist’s life with the colour scheme inspired by the original 16th century atlases. The final map is left blank.
