Background, history, commissioner of the work
Having spent my childhood in Sri Lanka, my work focuses on the gaps in between. The spaces that have no definition; between social practices that cannot be assimilated, chintz patterns that are disjointed from their environment, and bodies that are both incoherent and “exotic.” Distinct threads of thought are woven into one, reflecting a stream of thought.
Natural contractions, social paradoxes they weave in and out, connected only by my body. A mathematical translation point.
Thematic/contextual information
Often I am engaged in craft processes that either relate aesthetically or culturally to my Sri Lankan heritage. Being geographically distant, the result takes a different form or indeed one process is assimilated into another. The practice of wood carving is transmuted in textile, a material which relates more succinctly with the history of my family, my body and my knowledge. Other times, the purpose is removed, like an object migrating from the personal, intimate archives to the public.
