Background, history, commissioner of the work
I showed 'Rock Seat' as part of my 2011 solo exhibition in Glasgow Project Room, 'Terrestrial Objects'. It won the Flora Wood Award in Visual Arts Scotland's Annual Exhibition in 2012. It was photographed with the band 'Ryan and the Limbs' and the image was used as the cover for their eponymous 2019 album.
Thematic/contextual information
With 'Rock Seat', I wanted the seat to appear as if it were being encased by a rock-like substance, as though it was in the process of being fossilised. I often reference JG Ballard's futuristic writing in my work and this piece was influenced by his "The Crystal World', 1966. Furniture is a repeated presence in my work as a shorthand for human presence; I frequently select furniture to make into artworks that has clearly been used and shows the signs of this.
