Background, history, commissioner of the work

I was born and brought up in rural Aberdeenshire and studied sculpture and ceramics at Gray’s School of Art, Aberdeen. I had a successful art teaching career and have always continued my practice as a visual artist. I have a studio near Biggar and inspiration comes from the garden, landscape and travelling.    I am a professional member of SSA,VAS and PAI and over the years I was awarded prizes from the art school and also several prizes from RSA,VAS and PAI.

Thematic/contextual information

Landscape provides endless opportunities for artistic response; my current focus is on change and how landscape is shaped by the elements. This piece was inspired by the farming environment. Fragility in natural growth and decay provide inspiration for my work. Recently I have become particularly interested in the interaction of forms and am seeking to reflect this by combining different materials in my work. Specifically I have been working to incorporate metal and ceramic in my sculpture.
