Background, history, commissioner of the work
Produced as part of my body of work 'Rings of Fire', made for RSA New Contemporaries 2023 Exhibition. Shown as an installation alongside sculptures, video, performance.
Thematic/contextual information
I became interested in the role sports plays as a theatre of the absurd and a spectre of nationalism whilst making this work, using the legacy of ‘The Olympic Games’ as a structure to investigate ideas surrounding play, applause, win and lose, and patriotism.
Using sculpture and performance, I re-contextualised the ‘Games’ within the arena of the exhibition space, investigating the traditions, rituals and symbolism of the Olympics and the parallels that can be made with everyday life.
