Background, history, commissioner of the work
The sculpture contains 8 modular ceramic columns all finished in a stoneware glaze, the piece was installed outside Blackburn Cathedral during the very first National Festival of Making in 2017. I'm now looking for a permanent home for it. Unfortunately I cant store it any longer where it is.
Darwen Terracotta have worked with the Yorkshire Museum and Art Gallery, artist Grayson Perry and London's Natural History Museum. The quality of the piece is first class
Thematic/contextual information
For the artist, it is a story that reflects Blackburn’s history of workforce rebellion and protest, evoking the story of 1817 ‘Blanketeers March’ and their demands of rights for weavers against mechanisation.
The powerful structures, created using technology introduced at the company in 2010, but pioneered by Italian Ceramic Artist, Nino Caruso in the 1970’s, inspire contemplation on Darwen Terracotta’s history, a story of people rising together.
