Background, history, commissioner of the work
Mallow is based on a repeated form of the mallow flower abstracted. The carving was started at a stone carving festival in Dorset where I was looking at and drawing local plants. It was then completed at my studio in London. It has been exhibited a few times, for example at Space Station Sixty-Five in South-East London.
Thematic/contextual information
The theme of this work is the mallow flower as I have been looking at loss of biodiversity, monocultures and wildflowers.
The sculpture was also a study of interior space and a piece that could be turned and viewed in the round.
The centre of the sculpture is also painted with the colour of the mallow flower but then sanded away for a more subtle effect.
