Background, history, commissioner of the work
This artwork was commissioned by the Yorkshire Sculpture Park for my exhibition "Natural Selection" in 2006.
Thematic/contextual information
Hunter has made a representation of a mushroom cloud, presented to us on an ordinary household table. He scales down a devastating image, indicating to us how we experience the presence of such monstrous devices every day through the media.
By suspending marble dust in glass reinforced plastic, he also considers the particle-like nature of a cloud, and the difficult task of making that which is insubstantial and rapidly changing, into something solid and sculptural.
