Background, history, commissioner of the work

This image was made in my studio at a time when I was refamiliarizing myself with the processes of welding and cutting steel; reawakened by a move to the Northeast coast on Teesside. It was part of a series of works made between 1994-1998 which chart a physical and emotional journey. It has been exhibited on several occassions including a solo show in Normandy, France in 1998

Thematic/contextual information

The title Haven, evokes the idea of the 'home' as a place of safety and containment. No windows and no doors, only a chimney like 'steam valve'. It charts the beginnings of a painful emotional journey after my then wife, was diagnosed with breast cancer.
