Background, history, commissioner of the work
This piece was made for the 2023 New Contempories exhibition at the RSA, it is assembled with hand hewn and sawn timbers from key places I have lived and studied, there is Ash from Stroud where I was born, willow from Edinburgh where I studied, and Oak from Wales where I live now.
Grate is part of an ongoing series looking at how we as a species try and control the flow of water through our towns and cities. The grate itself is old, even, and bent, it has fought no debris in its tines all that remains is its form and the memory or filtration.
