Background, history, commissioner of the work
This work is part of the body of work 'Rings of Fire' made for the 2023 RSA New Contemporaries show. The fabric finish line was handmade by the artist between her studio and home, with all the letters individually made then sewn onto the fabric. The steel stands were made at Glasgow Sculpture Studios, where they were also spray painted.
Thematic/contextual information
The work was inspired by the Olympic Games, thinking about the Games as an arena for mass connsumption, glory and contemporary iconography. The 'Finish Line' embodies performative action through time and space - the concept of crossing the line and what this entails for the individual who does, and how this can be replicated in different spaces accross life and society, outside of the sports arena.
