About the Artwork
Although originally part of an installation, this work easily stands alone. An outsized bobbin lace piece; each bobbin is made by myself and modelled on life drawings of standing female figures. The ‘threads’ in this piece are made from strips from the clothing of female members of my family. Constructed as part of my degree show, it developed through looking at alternative ways to show family connection, without using children as the link.
Thematic/contextual information
Bobbin lace patterns were handed down the female line of the family and were different for each family. Bobbins are worked in pairs and there are 50 in this piece, 51 being the average age of menopause. I wanted to express a positive aspect to menopause; all the women in my family would have experienced it and my connection is through that. I also like the mixing of fine art and craft, using my degree and the craft of lace making.
