Background, history, commissioner of the work
This piece forms part of a body of work that evolved prior to the pandemic (2019-on) that explores the strangely familiar presence of ordinary domestic objects, presented in unexpected ways. These found objects are chosen for their familiarity and adopted as a starting point for the work. Other made elements are then combined to enhance this idea of 'unfamiliarising the familiar' which has continued to fascinate and provide motivation for new work since.
Thematic/contextual information
Cumulus, is a title that simply describes a cloud formation that is characterised by rounded masses heaped on each other above a flat base at low altitude. I was intrigued by the formal simplicity of these forms in relation to the plastic water tank. Water is the source of all clouds. The table is intergral to the work, elevating the 'softer' cushioned forms that create a direct bodily relationship to the viewers space without pretending to be a plinth.
