Background, history, commissioner of the work
I see my work as an assemble of fragments, all sharing a common denominator: figuration. The body acts as a zero-point, its physicality avoiding abstract re-invention, rather producing something more concrete. When considering this choreography of fragments, the life casts are continually self referential. Frozen moments in time, their humour and nostalgia take the edge off of the paintings intensity, replacing it with irony.
Thematic/contextual information
The ongoing Beacon series emerged as a response to the isolationism and domestication of self experienced through lockdown, where the only contact of life were the lights on in windows. What if they were signals? Cries for help? SOS Beacons signalling the lighthouse on the shore of the opposite terrace. So surrounded by ones self, the Beacons communicate an isolated inner monologue; a universal feeling of conversation gone unanswered; a silent echo.
