Thematic/contextual information
Artefact 1 was formed in a way that encouraged the collapsing, unpredictable shape. The intention was to work responsively with the material, allowing it to ‘choose’ its own form. The carved symbols are a flow of consciousness without predefined meaning. Nestled amongst the symbols is a poem, “An oak is a tree. A rose is a flower. A deer is an animal. A sparrow is a bird. Russia is our fatherland. Death is inevitable.”. Taken from The Gift by Nabokov, this is a nod to my Russian heritage.
