About the Artwork
Apollo is part of a pair designed and made in response to lectures undertaken as part of an MFA. I was inspired by the philosophy module to try a new style in my work. Using two types of stone gives the piece more of a contemporary feel even though sculpture is often regarded as being one of the oldest artforms. It is the first time that I have worked on two pieces simultaneously. The blonde sandstone is representative of the light of Apollo.
Thematic/contextual information
My inclination is to make work that has a look of movement, and I followed that tendency with the curved carving. Themed on the duality of Apollo and Dionysus as suggested by Nietzsche within Greek culture, this compelled me to produce a sculpture that embraced that nature. The Apollonian character, known for form and structure is in opposition to the Dionysian chaos and passion. It is though, in joining that they provide each other with a stability to go beyond their singular capacity.
