Background, history, commissioner of the work
This work is a studio piece - part of a series of three works depicting plants which clean.
the work was started at Prubeck stone carving festival and completed this summer at Burngate carving centre in Dorset and my studio in Deptford. It was recently exhibited at Second Floor Studios Open.
Thematic/contextual information
The theme of this work is plants which clean - in this case the air. I am planning two more sculptures of plants which clean soil and water. As a gardener I am interested in what plants have done to create our planet atmosphere and how they can help us clean up air, soil and water. Plants are the building blocks of our planet and keep it alive.
This work is a carving of a spider plant, turned on its side to give the full effect of the relief carving. It is placed on a Purbeck marble base.
