CALL OUT: Outta Space?

Outer Spaces and Sculpture Placement Group are exploring what role the visual arts can have in the changes to public spaces like shopping centres and the high street. SPG is always looking for ways to improve the economic conditions for artists in Scotland and help them maintain their practice. To achieve both these aims, SPG is collaborating with Outer Spaces to offer artwork storage and display opportunities in a former retail unit in The Burns Mall, Kilmarnock.

The Offer

We will store artworks (or related materials) in the back areas and upper floor of this vacant retail store, within a busy shopping centre in Kilmarnock. In the 4 available windows, we will display 3D artworks, for passing shoppers to view from the precinct. Viewing will be through the window only.

Every month we will rotate the artworks on display in the windows, and display the artists name and details on signage.

At present, we only have a budget for one transport journey, on Wed 26th October 2022. At this point we will collect as many artworks as we can on a first-come-first-serve basis. After this point we will be travelling to the centre approximately once a month, to rotate the artworks, and can take delivery of artworks. We can facilitate connections so that artists can share transport to the centre, but we can’t cover the costs or provide this transportation.

At any point we may be issued with 30 days notice to vacate the premises, upon which you will be responsible for the collection of your stored items and artworks, and any associated costs. Artworks will not be insured, and this is not a climate-controlled area.

Sculpture Placement Group put artworks into different kinds of public and community spaces, to bring amazing artworks to new audiences. This frees up space for the artist, and activates disused shop spaces. Sculpture Placement Group are funded by Creative Scotland and the William Grant Foundation.
