Circular Arts Network has launched the CAN Cargo Bike, a new shared transport resource supporting artists, organisations and community groups to move materials around Glasgow without relying on a car or van.

Available to borrow from the CAN Reuse Hub, the cargo bike can be used to collect materials from the Hub, transport items claimed through CAN, or move tools, equipment and supplies between studios, venues, workshops and projects.

The bike forms part of SPG and CAN’s wider work to build practical circular infrastructure for the arts sector. Alongside the CAN website, Reuse Hub, sharing events and new mobile reuse models such as the CAN Cart, the Cargo Bike supports the movement of materials through the network and helps make reuse easier in everyday practice.

The Cargo Bike has been made available through our partnership with the Scottish Contemporary Art Network (SCAN), supporting shared approaches to circularity, resource use and low-carbon working across the arts.

How it works

The CAN Cargo Bike is available to CAN members and users aged 18 or over who are confident cycling on public roads.

It can be booked in one-hour slots during CAN Reuse Hub opening hours:

Wednesday: 1–4pm
Friday: 10am–1pm

Collection and return both take place at:

Before borrowing the bike for the first time, users will receive a short induction with a member of the CAN team. This covers safe operation, loading guidance, locking procedures and return arrangements.

To borrow the bike, users will need:

• photo ID
• proof of address
• a completed loan agreement
• a short induction

Supporting circular practice

Transport is often one of the practical barriers to reuse. Artists and organisations may find materials through CAN but still need a way to collect them, especially when items are bulky, awkward or difficult to carry by hand.

The Cargo Bike offers a practical low-carbon alternative for moving materials across the city. By making transport easier, it helps keep more resources in circulation and supports the wider cultural shift towards reuse, sharing and circular working.

The launch of the CAN Cargo Bike builds on SPG’s ongoing work to test and develop infrastructure that supports sustainability across the arts — from redistributing materials and artworks, to creating new tools that help organisations reduce waste and rethink how resources move between projects.
